Workshops

17 – 19 August Barlinek Institute of Design along with the designers who qualified for stage 2 of the Creations from Nature 3.0 competition paid a visit to the Barlinek Factory. This year's edition of the competition was an exceptional one, taking on international status for the first time as designers from Russia, Romania and Ukraine were invited to participate. The day began with the contestants taking part in the most exciting part of the contest – the craft workshops. Over the course of the three-day stay in Barlinek, the participants had the opportunity to discover the technological process behind the creation of the Barlinek Board, feel the raw material they were later to work with, and spend time in the amazing atmosphere formed by all the people present at the workshops.

The competitive task for this, the third edition, was to create the floorboard of the future. During the workshop, each of the contestants could construct boards to form part of our lives in 10 or 20 years time. They could choose to feel the texture and structure of 100% wood, its warmth and stability, and to become aware of the potential provided by this material. Then, by conducting a variety of experiments on colouring, and changing the texture and shape of the board, they discovered the route to creating a prototype of the boards they had designed in the first stage.

The results of the contest will be unveiled in October at the gala finale during the Łódź Design Festival.

Barlinek Institute of Design is a collaborative programme with architects and interior designers. The Creations from Nature competition could not take place without the help of such people as the designers who make up the jury – Przemysław Łukasik, Agnieszka Stefańska, Iwona Gach and Tomasz Błuszkowski, or SAICOS, the company which supports the participants with its knowledge and experience in the field of wood enrichment, protection and conservation. We cannot forget either about the media mentor of the competition – Design Alive, the magazine of beautiful ideas.
