IDEA

Barlinek Institute of Design is a platform for architects that dedicates support by our professional consultants, it prioritises service allowing access to the data base of our products (CAD textures).

Barlinek Institute of Design also organizes periodical free training to architects in many polish cities and also at our factory in Barlinek.

We also organize an international competition “Creations of Nature”, as well as taking part in the most important design festivals in Poland and the rest of the world. We show wood as a raw material which accompanies us in everyday life, sometimes in a way that is not obvious but quite surprising.

CREATIONS OF NATURE

History likes to repeat itself. Wood is an element of Barlinek’s identity. We owe a lot to it. Its fragrance, touch, and structure are unique in their nature. Today we would like to pay special attention to it and draw from this endless source of inspiration. We would like to share our experiences with the best designers and architects in order to redefine and rediscover the nature of wood.
Therefore, Barlinek established the Institute of Design to inaugurate, together with the Design Alive magazine, the “Creations of Nature” project. Apart from a competition for designers and architects, this project will also include craft workshops and unique artistic performances.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK – SENSORIAL CARPENTRY

After its success at the Lodz Design Festival, the interactive “Sensorial Carpentry” exhibition was presented on the international stage during the most prestigious design week (12-17 April). We moved the Barlinek, Tabanda and “Design Alive” workshop, full of forest scents, for seven days to Zona Tortona in Milan, for the international audience to discover the true magic of wood, to test different tools and experience nature with all their senses.

“Sensorial Carpentry” presented wood in a fair and professional, but above all unconventional manner. It let guests feel like true carpenters – to discover wood from a brand new perspective. A unique exhibition space was built for seven days in April at Via Tortona, well known by design lovers and famous for its many showrooms, workshops and design studios. The interactive installation was primarily a workshop with the aroma of wood, which in addition to hundreds of gorgeous tree seedlings featured raw wood and tools. Every visitor could for a moment become a lumberjack, an artist, a designer, put on a plaid shirt and a beard, and get to work.

BARLINEK ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING

THE BARLINEK ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING

THE BARLINEK ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING – A NATURAL FLOOR DESIGNED TO MAKE FULL USE OF THE PROPERTIES OF WOOD

The Barlinek engineered wood flooring is a product known in Europe as “engineered wood” or a multi-layered floorboard. It originates in Scandinavia, where the locals have learned that solid wood floors, although beautiful, start working immediately after laying due to the effects of varying air humidity, which can lead to them drying out, bulging and creaking. In response to this challenge, the practical Scandinavians have created a product, which combines the beauty of natural wood with resistance to deformation caused by changes in humidity. And this is “engineered wood”. The combination of a surface layer made of hard solid wood — oak, ash or birch — with two layers of pine attached in opposition forms a 100% wooden, naturally beautiful and durable floor which is resistant to changes in humidity. This solution is so effective that it even enables multi-layered floors to be laid over underfloor heating.

FLOOR PATTERN AND DIMENSIONS

The Barlinek floorboard is available in one- or three-strip option. The one-strip version, i.e. without division of the front into visible strip rows, resembles solid floorboards, and the three-strip version, i.e. with three stave rows across the floorboard, looks like a traditional parquet.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Thanks to the three-layer floorboard structure, which enhances the wood stability, the floor prepared in such a way is perfect for underfloor heating. Unlike solid floorboards, it does not absorb heat.

PRACTICAL BENEFITS OF A BARLINEK FLOOR

  • 100% natural – 100% wood,
  • a ready floor – factory finished: lacquered or oiled, no additional investment*,
  • the floor can be laid in two ways: by the floating method or by gluing it to the subfloor,
  • assembly: simple (can be done independently), clean (no mess in the home), very quick, without gluing the joints, no need to scrape down immediately after laying or to lacquer the surface,
  • the floor is ready for use immediately after laying,
  • the wooden floor can be combined aesthetically with a ceramic floor,
  • more efficient floor heating – the optimum thickness of the floorboard means better heat conductivity,
  • a warm, safe and healthy floor,
  • low cost of laying the floor – compared to a traditional parquet,
  • the aesthetics of the laid floor – perfect appearance thanks to the stability of the cross construction,
the floor can be chosen according to how intensively it will be used,
  • the thickness of the surface layer enables renovation to be carried out on the floor,
  • it can be dismantled and re-laid somewhere else,
  • care: an easy floor to keep clean,
  • it can be laid on underfloor heating even when the heating is electrical,
  • the floor causes no allergic reactions, regulates the room’s micro-climate, does not attract static like laminated panels

*In the case of floors coated with natural oils, Wax Care Plus is advised to be applied to the surface after laying.

TOP LAYER CLASSIFICATION

expand
collapse

TOP LAYER CLASSIFICATION

A wooden floor is a natural product in which every floorboard has a unique appearance. When deciding to buy one, the customer must be aware that the colour and intensity of the characteristics of the wood may differ from the sample book at the sales point.

In order to reduce the variation of individual floorboards, Barlinek has divided them into classes. This kind of selection of wood is simply a way of sorting the floorboards systematically according to strict guidelines. Customers thus have the possibility to choose the class of floor when buying. It is important to inform them that the classification of the surface layer of the floor only concerns the appearance of the floor and does not affect its quality.

TYPES OF FINISHING USED

Among the different floor finishes there are three treatments that are the most characteristic.

Brushing is a modern method of highlighting the natural beauty of wood grain and enhancement of its structure. Invoice brushed the floor is palpable to the touch.

Phasing is a small cutting, edge boards, emphasizes the outline of individual boards, which visually increases the size of the room.

Staining – Barlinek produces stained floors in lacquered and natural oiled finishings. Barlinek floorboards may be stained one colour, or with two thanks to the latest technology.

BRUSHING FLOORS

  • originality and uniqueness
  • brushing emphasises the wood grain pattern
  • the effects of use do not show up so much on a brushed floor
  • traces of scratches are far less visible in rooms where there are animals

BEVELLING FLOORS

  • four-sided bevelling – milling an individual floorboard on four sides
  • four-sided micro-bevelling – subtly milling an individual floorboard on four sides
  • two-sided bevelling – lateral milling of an individual floorboard on two sides
  • two-sided micro-bevelling – subtly milling an individual floorboard on two sides

STAINING FLOORS

  • dzięki barwieniu można uzyskać inne odcienie niż naturalne drewna

LACQUER VS OIL

expand
collapse

LAQUERED FLOORS

The lacquering technology for the Barlinek floorboard uses a multi-layered coating of acrylic lacquer hardened by UV rays. The floor is coated with up to 7 layers of a lacquer system by leading producers in the industry.

RESISTANCE TO INTENSIVE USE – ABRASION

When selecting a lacquer for rooms in public facilities where greater foot traffic can be expected, choose a floor finished with professional semi-matte or matte lacquer. Any mechanical damage on such surfaces will be less visible than on highly polished lacquers. On a brushed surface finished with matte lacquer, any minor scratches which may appear will be far less visible than on a floor without a brushed surface.

Floors finished with high-gloss lacquer are not recommended for intensively used places. On this lacquer, light reflecting from the floor surface gives the impression that every scratch is much more visible. Lacquers with high gloss are more recommended for living rooms, for example, where there is not so much movement passing through.

MICROCLIMATIC CONDITIONS

The wood is appropriately hard, healthy, and above all natural. This is why it also slightly expands/shrinks under the influence of a room’s microclimatic conditions. For this reason Barlinek uses flexible lacquers which harmonise perfectly with the wooden floor.

LAMINATE AND LACQUER

What would happen if something hard, like a mug or pan, fell on the floor and the lacquer did not have sufficient flexibility? Wood will naturally yield to the force, but when the lacquer does not yield along with it, this results in the lacquer cracking. So lacquer on wood cannot be compared with laminates.
The lacquer test is mainly concerned with its resistance to abrasion and elasticity. These two parameters are of the utmost importance for users of wooden floors.

KEY TEST

It often happens that a customer does a key test on laminates and on wooden floors, claiming indigantly that the floor is scratching. This is true, but would lacquer on a car pass this test? Of course not, there is no chance of any lacquer standing up to this type of action.

PROFESSIONAL LACQUER

Super-resistant lacquer works excellently even in heavily used rooms. Lacquer resistant to food stains. Winner of a Swedish abrasion resistance test.

HIGH GLOSS LACQUER

An excellent solution for impressive elegant interiors.

SEMI-MATT LACQUER

Emphasises the natural character of the wood floor and the depth of its design.

MATT LACQUER

Intensifies the impression of consiness and warmth.

OILED FLOORS

The oil penetrates the structure of the wood, emphasizing its natural qualities and beauty.

UV OIL FINISHED FLOORS

UV oil forms a protective coating on the surface of the wood, increases its resistance to dirt, impregnates it and protects it against damp, as well as highlighting the natural traits of the wood. It is hardened very quickly using UV light during the production process. Some of the oil penetrates into the structure of the wood, with the rest forming a delicate layer on its surface. The floor should be oiled periodically while it is in use. The frequency of the oiling will lessen significantly with time. More information in the floor care section.

FLOORS FINISHED USING NATURAL OIL, KNOWN AS OXIDATION OIL (OXY)

The natural oil penetrates into the structure of the wood, impregnates it and protects it against damp, in a more visible way than UV oil. The oil slowly enters the wood structure, then hardens over about 7 days after application. It is recommended to apply Wax Care Plus (natural oil) to the surface of the floor immediately after laying it. More information in the floor care section.

ADVANTAGES OF OILED FLOORS

ADVANTAGES OF LACQUERED FLOORS

  • resistant and durable: risk of abrasion reduced as much as possible
  • appropriately flexible: better protection against crumbling and cracking
  • lthe lacquer yields along with the floorboard: to prevent it being damaged,
  • excellent adhesion of individual layers of lacquer to each other, and of the lacquer to the wood
  • low surface tension: this means less attraction of dust
  • a high gloss lacquer (95° on the Gardner scale), constituting a perfect solution for rooms with classic antique furniture and décor
  • the unique quality and climate of wooden floors at an attractive price
  • ecological and healthy: perfect for children’s and teenagers’ rooms
  • easy to take care of
  • ecological lacquers used by Barlinek are effective protection for a wooden floor, without solvents destroying the Earth’s ozone layer.

ADVANTAGES OF OILED FLOORS

  • oiled wood floors acquire a unique appearance
  • the oil creates an anti-static surface, which is warm to the touch
  • the floor is static-free and does not attract dust
  • natural oil coated floors are exceptionally durable and no problem to maintain, although we recommend periodic care
  • renovation does not require sanding, and you can do it yourself in a few hours
  • małe rysy są mniej widoczne niż na powłoce lakierowanej
  • spot repairs are possible
  • minor scratches are less visible than on a lacquered floor
  • it is recommended for homes where there are animals
  • easy everyday care and maintenance, which you can do yourself.

CARE OF BARLINEK FLOORS

expand
collapse

CARE OF BARLINEK FLOORS

Natural wood floors require that users take regular care of them and use the proper care agents. Proper care of floorboards means the floor stays beautiful and has a longer life. It should be remembered that the optimum conditions for a wooden floor are a moisture level of around 45-60% and a temperature within the range 18-24°C. Following these requirements guarantees long term use.

When using Barlinek wooden floors, regardless of whether it is a lacquer or oilfinished floor, it is worth remembering a few basic rules for preventing damage.

Water and sand are wood floors worst enemies. The floor is kept clean by sweeping, vacuuming and periodically wiping it with damp – but never wet – fabric.

To protect wooden floors against the effects of sand and water, and in winter also against salt, it is worth laying protective mats in front of the entrance to the home.

Pedestals, legs and other points of furniture pressure on a floor should be protected by felt underlay (do not secure them with nails).

Avoid walking on the floor in high heeled shoes.

Floorboards should not be laid in rooms where the floor is likely to come into direct contact with water, or in particularly humid rooms.

The floor under office chairs on wheels should be protected with a floor mat to prevent damage.

We recommend you use the appropriate Protektor series care products to look after brushed lacquered floors.

CARE OF LACQUERED FLOORS

PROTEKTOR CONCENTRATE

Agent for everyday floor care. This agent, added in proportions of 100ml per 5l of water, ensures simultaneous cleaning and protection of the surface. In case of difficult stains use Protektor Complete.

PROTEKTOR COMPLETE

Strong cleaner for lacquered floors. Removes remains of Protektor Concentrate and Protektor Shine as well as dirt and grease. Use – periodically for thorough cleaning, as well as for each individual wash before applying Protektor Shine. Dilute in the proportions of 100 ml per 5 litres of water. It can also be applied directly to stubborn stains.

PROTEKTOR SHINE

An agent for renovating lacquer. Immediately after laying a lacquered floor, Barlinek recommends using a mop to apply Protektor Shine. This agent will form a kind of film on the surface of the wooden floor, protecting the floorboards against dirt gathering on them and water penetrating into the joints between them. It is particularly recommended for floors where minor scratches have appeared over the years of use. It should gently conceal them (a minor visual improvement to the floor’s appearance).
Important: Do not dilute Protektor Shine! It should be poured directly on to the floor and spread with a mop. When using Protektor Shine again, do not forget to wash off the previous layer using Protektor Complete.

IMPORTANT: The floor should be cared for using only agents intended for this purpose.

* Use of care agents for lacquered floors made by manufacturers other than Barlinek may result in staining, discolouration of floors or major changes to their slipperiness and sheen. Barlinek bears no responsibility for the effects of using agents made by other manufacturers.
All recommendations regarding the regularity of cleaning and caring for floors are given for reference only and depend on actual intensity of use. For these reasons they may not form the basis for warranty claims. Sand trailed or water spilt on the floor have very undesirable effects on it and it is vital to remove them. Thorough cleaning with Protektor Shine only needs to be done rarely and may be delayed considerably by regular cleaning and keeping the floor in a good condition.

RECOMMENDED CARE OF UV OILED WOODEN FLOORS

MAINTENANCE SOAP

Soap for everyday care of UV oiled floors. Use only soapy water for wiping the floor (100 ml soap per 5 l warm water). Floor soap not only washes the floor but also forms a protective layer on it which protects the wood against dirt. Two buckets should be used, one for soapy water for soaking the mop and a second with hot water for wringing it out. The soap is suitable for flooring, furniture, kitchen worktops and all indoor items made of wood.

INTENSIVE CLEANER

Intensive Cleaner removes dirt, grease and old layers of soap.
If the floor is heavily soiled, dilute the cleaner in the proportion 1:8 and spray it over the floor. Wash with a clean mop after about 5 minutes. Two buckets should also be used in this case. Leave it to dry for a few hours. Then protect the floor with maintenance oil and rub dry. Intensive cleaner does not damage impregnated or lacquered surfaces.
ATTENTION! Intensive cleaner degreases the floor, thus increasing the absorption of the oil, which is a basic condition for proper protection of the floor. After using Intensive Cleaner, the place where it was applied should always be oiled with maintenance oil.

MAINTENANCE OIL

Maintenance depending on how heavily used the floor is (suggested as the first agent to use immediately after the floor is laid).
Maintenance oil is good for all oiled wooden surfaces. Used as a refreshing and care agent, depending on the degree of surface soiling, usually once or twice a year.
It can be more often, particularly during impregnation of a new floor or when the floor becomes matted and grey. Maintenance oil is recommended as the first agent for a floor immediately after it is laid. Makes everyday care easier and increases the floor’s resistance to dirt. Its consistency makes it easy to use. It is easy to apply and no auxiliary equipment is required, such as a buffer. All it takes is to pour the oil on the wood floor, apply it with a trowel and leave it in that form to soak in for 15 -30 minutes.
Then remove the excess oil with a damp cloth. The used cloth should be rinsed out or burnt to avoid combustion.

IMPORTANT: The floor should be cared for using only agents intended for this purpose.

* Use of care agents for floors oiled with natural oils made by manufacturers other than Barlinek may result in staining, discolouration of dyed or colourless floors or major changes to their slipperiness and sheen. ** Recommended for first care immediately after laying the floor. Afterwards according to the table.
The frequency of oiling is reduced after two or three years of oiling the floor. Oil in wood pores prevents further penetration and the next oiling should take place within approx. 24 months.

RECOMMENDED CARE OF NATURALLY OILED WOOD FLOORS

WASH CARE MAINTENANCE SOAP

Maintenance Soap is used for everyday care of naturally oiled wood floors. It is diluted with water in the proportions 100ml of soap per 5ml clean water. Floor soap not only washes the floor but also forms a protective filter on it which protects the wood against dirt. Spread the soap solution over the floor using a damp mop. Two buckets should be used, one for soapy water for soaking the mop and a second with hot, clean water for wringing it out. Maintenance soap is suitable for cleaning oiled wooden floors, furniture, kitchen worktops and all indoor items made of wood.

MAGIC CLEANER

Concentrate for heavily soiled and greasy floors, and for floors to be renovated. Removes grease and dirt. The agent should be used in proportions of 1 to 10. Apply the diluted solution evenly over the floor using a well-wrung mop or clean cotton cloth. In the case of highly stubborn and difficult to remove stains, Magic Cleaner can be used undiluted.
After pouring the agent on the floor, wait about 5 minutes for the liquid to start working. Gather the dirt released using a clean cloth, then wash 2 or 3 times with clean water. Repeat this action if necessary.
After the floor has dried completely apply Wax Care Plus maintenance agent (there is a description below of the use of this product). The agent can be used for floors oiled with both dyed and uncoloured oils.

WAX CARE PLUS

Wax Care Plus is used for first and periodic care and for refreshing floors finished with natural oil. Regular maintenance of the floor using this agent protects its surface, visually levels out minor scratches and restores the original colour of the floor.
In the case of floors coated with natural oils, Wax Care Plus is advised to be applied to the surface immediately after laying. Vacuum clean or brush the floor before applying this agent.
Wax Care Plus should be applied to the floor after cleaning and evenly spread using a cotton cloth or mop with an applicator pad and then left to dry.

WOOD WALL – A FLOOR IS NOT ENOUGH

The Barlinek Floorboard can also be fitted on the wall! Thanks to this, the room becomes quieter, more cosy and warm. Laying a floorboard also on the wall is an idea for an original interior. Thanks to the variety of wood species in the range of the Barlinek Floorboard and varied widths, you gain endless solutions. The Barlinek’s product range includes a specially designed assembly clip, which allows for safe, quick and easy assembly of any 14 mm thick board on the wall surface. For the finishing of internal or external corners, flat bars or aluminium angles that are generally available on the market can be used. Connections of floorboards with adjacent walls can be masked with wooden elements, such as quarter rounds, aluminium profiles or colour-matched acrylic masses.

INSTALLATION

STEP 1

Check the level of the wall using a spirit level. The deviation must not exceed 2 mm over 2 metres.

STEP 2

Mark the places where the wooden construction floats, with a cross-section measuring at least 18mm x 50mm, are to be attached. Attach the first float a maximum of 10cm from the internal or external corner.

STEP 3

The distance between subsequent floats should not exceed 50 cm.

STEP 4

Attach the floats using rawlplugs, remembering that their heads must not protrude beyond the float.

STEP 5

The floats must form a single plane. Check this by using a spirit level applied over a width of at least 3 floats. If necessary use plywood or other material to level the structure.

STEP 6

Check the level of the wall using a spirit level. The deviation must not exceed 2 mm over 2 metres.

STEP 7

Before fitting the boards, acclimatise them in their factory packaging for around 48 hours. The Barlinek board is made from natural wood, which makes its pattern unique. Because of this, select and decide on the colour scheme of the surface to be covered before starting.

STEP 8

Apply wood or construction glue to the wooden structural beams (to a height of one board). Lay the first board, with the tongue removed, to the glued grid and fix it from above with the clips.

STEP 9

Fit the mounting clip into the protruding groove, then screw it on to each beam with the aid of a wood screw.

STEP 10

Connect the subsequent boards together using the locks, knocking them home.

STEP 11

The external corners can be finished by, for example, trimming the edges of the boards at an angle of 45 degrees. Apply assembly glue where the edges meet.

STEP 12

Apply assembly glue where the boards meet at the corner trimmed in this way.

This means that Next Step floors are perfect for rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms and corridors. They can be installed without restrictions, in all rooms of any grade of the home and office. The 14-day water impact test did not affect the floorboard structure and floor specification remained unchanged.
